Here are some upside
down hanging tomato planters I made late spring 2007. I cut the bottoms
off of some 2-liter pop bottles with a serrated knife (and I did a quick,
messy job of it), and drilled some holes in the sides of the plastic edges
where I strung some twine to hang them with. The real trick is getting
the plants in there without damaging them, and I did end up killing one
plant by accidentally snapping it. This picture was taken after a good
week or two of the plants settling into their new containers. I just used
some fresh potting soil to plant them in, and in retrospect this was my
first attempt at this and I should have used better soil to plant them
in. I should have added some peat moss or another moisture holding substance
because these tomato plants seemed to dry out and not do so well. Larger
containters would probably be better. Also, these tomato plants came from
a packet of heirloom seeds so the varieties probably did not lend well
to that type of setup. But this picture looks like progress is being made,
and before the dog days of summer kicked in, it was! Nevertheless this
was a learning experience, my quick attempt at homemade upside down hanging
tomato planters. You can also purchase them online: Hanging
